Senate Hearings on Bitcoin: What You Need to Know

So maybe you’ve heard some chatter about United States Senate hearings on Bitcoin this week. But did you know there’s more than one hearing on Bitcoin happening in the Senate this week? The first hearing is taking place on Monday and involves the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee. The hearing is taking place at 3 PM Eastern time.

Witnesses on the side of the federal government include  Jennifer Shasky Calvery of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Mythili Ramanof the U.S. Department of Justice, and Edward W. Lowery III from the United States Secret Service.

On the side of Bitcoin, Ernie Allen from The International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children, Patrick Murck of The Bitcoin Foundation, Jeremy Allaire from Circle Financial, and Jerry Brito from George Mason University.

The hearings will be streamed live. When we have more information on stream availability tomorrow, we’ll let you know.

The second hearing, by the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, will take place on Tuesday at 3:30 PM.

Called “The Present and Future Impact of Virtual Currency,” the witnesses on the side of the government are:

Ms. Jennifer Shasky Calvery, Director, Financial Crimes Enforcement Network: and Mr. David Cotney, Commissioner of Banks, Massachusetts Division of Banks.

And on the side of Bitcoin:

Mr. Anthony Gallippi, Co-founder and CEO, BitPay, Incorporated; Mr. Chris Larsen, Founder and CEO, Ripple Labs; Ms. Sarah Jane Hughes, University Scholar and Fellow in Commercial Law, Indiana University Maurer School of Law; and Mr. Paul Smocer, BITS President, Financial Services Roundtable.
